Pictures Library won't open. I am unable to directly open my Pictures library in Windows 7. If access the documents or music libraries from the start menu, both open just fine, but the start-pictures approach simply does nothing. The files are there (I can access by going to 'my pictures' in the navigation pane.

Back up your library

Why can't Firefox upload pictures from Mac photos library? Also when you do open Photos, it still doesn't work. Had this issue for years. Works in Chrome fine. Using iCloud and its set as system library, and can upload from desktop fine, but not Library. Any resolution?

Before following any of these steps, it's a good idea to create a backup of your photo library, even if you use iCloud Photos. You can use Time Machine, use a third-party backup solution, or copy the library to an external drive. By default, your photo library is stored in the Pictures folder within your home folder.

Make sure that your software is up to date

Photos is part of the Mac operating system. You can avoid or fix many issues by running the most up-to-date version of macOS. Learn more about updating the software on your Mac.

If the Media Browser isn't showing your photos and videos

Use the Media Browser to make images from your photo library available in other apps, like Pages and iMovie. The Media Browser shows only the contents of the Photos library designated as the System Photo Library. If you have more than one Photos library—and the one you're using isn't set as the System Photo Library—the Media Browser won't show its contents.

Follow these steps to designate the current library as the System Photo Library:

Choose Photos > Preferences.
Click the General button at the top of the Preferences window.
Click Use as System Photo Library.

If you're having other issues with Photos

If you're experiencing other issues—like missing or blank photo thumbnails, unexpected behavior, or if Photos won’t open—try to see if it's an issue with your library by following these steps.

Create a new Photos library and see if your issues persist:

Quit Photos.
Press and hold the Option key while you open Photos.
In the dialog that appears, click Create New.
Give your new library a name, then click OK. Note whether Photos opens successfully with this new library.

To return to your main Photos library, quit Photos. Then open it again while holding the Option key, select your main library, and click Choose Library.

Alternatively, you can open Photos in another user account on your Mac and note whether Photos opens successfully.

If Photos opens with the new library, or in a different user account, it might mean that there's an issue with your library. Follow the steps to use the Photos library repair tool on your main Photos library.

How to set up iCloud Photo Library on your Mac

Launch the Photos app on your Mac.
Select the Photos menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
Go to Preferences.
Click on the iCloud tab.

How to optimize your photo and video storage

If you routinely shoot 4K video or high-quality images on your iPhone, iPad, or DSLR, you may run out of storage space fast. (I have a 1TB iMac, but also have almost a terabyte of 4K video stored in iCloud — it gets unwieldy, fast!) This is especially true if you have a Mac laptop with limited hard drive space: It's nice to look at your iPhone's gorgeous Portrait mode photos, but not necessarily always practical to store all of them locally.

Thankfully, Apple offers an Optimize Storage option, which lets you store full-resolution photos and videos of only your most recently shot and accessed imagery; all older photos and videos are available to download via iCloud and are stored as low-resolution previews on your device to save space. You can switch between optimizing your Mac's photos storage or storing your full library locally: Here's how!

Note: If you plan on using Optimize Storage, we suggest having at least one device that stores your entire library locally (usually a Mac with a large local or external hard drive), so you have multiple backups of your photographs and video.

Launch the Photos app on your Mac.
Click Photos in the App menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.

crarko adds: OK, Apple that's kind of crazy. The Library folder is the only item that has this behavior. Go to library on mac. Releasing it causes it to vanish. Holding down the Option key with the Go menu selected causes 'Library' to appear in the list.
